<p id="yui_3_3_0_4_1327686118911886">Like many female powerlifters, Abbey Watson doesn&#8217;t typically get a lot of press attention. Holding eight different world records for her relatively slight weight class &#8212; 105.75 pounds &#8211; as well as 23 U.S. and Colorado state records, Watson is the kind of peak performer who has forced the general public to take notice. To achieve that success, Watson spends at least three very early mornings each week in the gym, doing deadlifts and squats while surrounded by very large men.</p>

<p>Yet, it&#8217;s what Watson does after that gym time that makes her stand out: She goes to middle school.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s right: A 13-year-old eighth-grader in Colorado <a href="http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/SIG=13tv287i8/EXP=1328895716/**http%3A//www.9news.com/news/local/article/244661/222/13-year-old-girl-becomes-record-setting-weight-lifter-" target="_blank">happens to be a powerlifting world-record holder</a>. For the record (no pun intended), Watson owns <a href="http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/SIG=13rh2rkrv/EXP=1328895716/**http%3A//www.texaslifting.com/American%2520World%2520Records/American%2520Women%2520Unequipped%2520PL.htm" target="_blank">the junior marks for bench press, squat, deadlift and total weight</a> in the 105-pound unequipped division, among others. Most notably, Watson set the world record for squats in her division, lifting 143.3 points. She also deadlifts 176 pounds, close to twice her body weight.</p>
<p>As covered by Denver CBS affiliate KUSA in the video you see above, what&#8217;s even more impressive is <span id="more-4141"></span>the speed at which Watson has become one of the world&#8217;s best; she only started lifting three years ago.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think that if someone would have told me at the beginning of sixth grade I&#8217;d be lifting this much, I would never believe them,&#8221; Watson, who now holds a deadlift record of 176 pounds, told KUSA.</p>
<p>While the early morning workouts and quirky weightlifting clothing &#8212; <a href="http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/SIG=13tv287i8/EXP=1328895716/**http%3A//www.9news.com/news/local/article/244661/222/13-year-old-girl-becomes-record-setting-weight-lifter-" target="_blank">check out her BACON socks</a> &#8212; could mark Watson out for some peer jibes, the fact that she is constantly proving herself with massive feats of strength ensures they don&#8217;t. Rather, the eighth-grader said that when she tells male classmates how much she lifts, they tend to be intimidated.</p>
<p>That may not have been the initial goal when Watson&#8217;s father, Steve Watson, first brought her to a weightlifting center for one of his workouts when she was a precocious sixth-grader. He simply hoped the one-off visit would inspire her to develop positive workout habits.</p>
<p>His daughter certainly has those now, as well as a room full of trophies, thanks in part to <a href="http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/SIG=13tv287i8/EXP=1328895716/**http%3A//www.9news.com/news/local/article/244661/222/13-year-old-girl-becomes-record-setting-weight-lifter-" target="_blank">a psychological advantage</a> her coach says may be her secret weapon.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think the reason Abbey is lifting weight that surpasses adults is because she&#8217;s never been told she can&#8217;t do it,&#8221; Watson&#8217;s head coach Jonathan Sabar told KUSA. &#8220;It&#8217;s been amazing watching her grow and develop, and at this point, she is doing weights that are as heavy if not heavier than what full grown women do.</p>

<p>Remember those old stories your grandpa used to tell you about walking to school uphill in a snowstorm both ways? Well, it might not be completely true, but it might be a good idea. </p>
<p>According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, between 16 percent and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese. It is a problem that needs to be dealt with. </p>
<p>First the not-so-fun facts (according to the AACAP): </p>
<li>300,000 deaths each year are caused by unhealthy weight gain due to poor diet and lack of exercise. </li>
<li>The annual cost to society for obesity is estimated at almost $100 billion. </li>
<li>Studies show that a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has an 80 percent chance of becoming an obese adult. </li>
<li>Obesity most commonly begins in childhood between the ages of 5 and 6 and during adolescence. </li>
<li>Generally, a child is not considered obese until his or her weight is at least 10 percent more than what is recommended for the height and body type. </li>
<li>If one parent is obese, there is a 50 percent chance that the children will also be obese. </li>
<li>If both parents are obese, there is an 80 percent chance that the children will be obese. </li>
<li>Although certain medical disorders can cause obesity, less than 1 percent is caused by physical problems. In my opinion, our kids need to engage in a lifestyle that lends itself to more exercise and physical activity. Technology and lifestyle changes have taken a toll on the fitness and activity levels of our kids. 
<p>I have a few ideas: </p>
<p><strong>1. No more TV remotes.</strong> Kids need to get up and turn the channel and change the volume. </p>
<p><strong>2. Better yet,<span id="more-2662"></span> how about less TV and video games?</strong> </p>
<p><strong>3. No more garage openers.</strong> Make the kids get out and lift the garage door up. Yes, even in the snow sleet and rain. If the mailman can deliver in those conditions, so can our kids. </p>
<p><strong>4. Walk to school.</strong> Not only does that increase the activity level, but it also may reduce stress levels in children according to a study published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. (Although I think the lowering of stress on the walk might be because of the absence of Mom&#8217;s reminders on the way and her barrage of questions on the way home). </p>
<p><strong>5. How about this one &#8212; try having them get up to find a phone number out of the phone book sitting in the cupboard instead of just pulling out the cell phone as they continue to sit.</strong> Do kids even know what the Yellow Pages are? </p>
<p><strong>6. Mow the lawn.</strong> Instead of hiring a landscaping professional, let the kids do it. You may have an unmowed little strip of grass at the end, which may stick out a little, but think of their health and your savings. </p>
<p><strong>7. Have them walk to school up hills both ways in the snow.</strong> Hey, if it worked 50 years ago, it certainly still cam work today.</li>
