Southlake police bust so-called gym burglary ring
With the help of some sharp-eyed residents, Southlake police busted what they believe is a serial burglary ring targeting gyms.
Members at Crossfit Gym in Southlake first noticed the two suspects when they walked in wearing sandals earlier this month. Then they started doing curls with dumbbells, even though there was no class going on.
One of the suspects, identified as 24-year-old Matthew Nealy and 21-year-old Marcus Mims, swiped a woman’s phone. She took after him and demanded he give it back.
“The lady eventually confronted him and said, ‘Give me my phone, I saw you put it in your pocket,'” Damian Norris, trainer, said. “[He] pulled it out and it was her phone.”
They called Southlake police about the suspects. While one officer got their description, another got a vehicle description.
Officer Frank Rogers spotted the car, got the men in handcuffs and began searching for stolen goods.
He found a pistol, marijuana, a 9 millimeter magazine, jewelry and $2,000 in cash.
Police suspect Nealy and Mims committed several other gym burglaries in at least six surrounding cities, including Bedford, Keller and North Richland Hills.
