Why do alcohol consumers exercise at higher levels than non-consumers?

Examining physical activity levels and alcohol consumption: are people who drink more active?

 Abstract

Abstract Objective . Summarize/categorize current scientific literature examining the association between alcohol consumption (AC) and levels of physical activity (PA).

Data Source . Electronic databases spanning education, psychology, sociology, medicine, and interdisciplinary reports. Study Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria . Included studies (n  =  17) must be published in a peer-reviewed, English language journal; measure either AC or PA as an independent/dependent variable; and primarily examine the relationship between AC and PA.

Data Extraction . Search terms/phrases included alcohol, alcohol consumption, drinking, physical activity, exercise, and physically active.

Data Synthesis . The Matrix Method and PRISMA guidelines organized pertinent literature and identified/extracted salient findings.

Results . Alcohol consumers of all ages were more physically active than nondrinking peers. Further, several studies suggest a dose-response relationship between AC and PA, indicating that as drinking increases, so does PA level. Conclusion . Reviewed studies support a positive association between AC and PA across all ages.

Findings were contrary to the hypothesis of the investigators. Future research should place specific emphasis on identifying why alcohol consumers exercise at higher levels than non-alcohol consumers.

  1. Dead Lift-
    5 x 275lbs
    5 x 285 lbs
    4 x 305 lbs

    Then mini metcon-
    25 wall balls
    25 burpees

  2. WOD #2 from the 2011 Crossfit Games Open Competition:

    AMRAP in 15 min of:
    9 Deadlifts (100#)
    12 Games-Style Push Ups
    15 Box Jumps (20″)

8 rds + 3 deadlifts… PR by nearly a round, which I was pleased with.

  3. Modified version of 2011 sectional WOD #2, because my hand was ripped from Double Fran yesterday.

    AMRAP 15 of:
    9 back extensions
    12 push-ups (hand release)
    15 box jumps (24″)

10 rounds + 9 + 11. I believe my score in the actual sectional was 9 rds + 9 + 5, so this was good, even though back extensions were probably easier than the deads. Push-ups felt much better and box jumps were quick. I’ll take it, but I need a day off now.
